I’m a sociologist and writer. My work examines the fraught intersection of capitalism and democracy with a particular interest in philanthropy’s tendency to undermine our collective ability to participate, organize, and act politically. Previously at Stanford, I am the founder and co-director of Private Wealth and the Public Good—an initiative using research, reform, and public policy to counteract the democratic dysfunctions of extreme wealth inequality.
